How it works

Getting started is easy

1

Say hello

Message us on Facebook, call (647) 464-6315, or email kelvzbookkeeping@outlook.com. Tell us, in your own words, what you need — a return filed, books cleaned up, payroll sorted. No question is too small.

2

We tell you what to bring

You get a short, plain list of the slips and documents for your situation — T4s, receipts, last year’s return — so nothing is missing when we start.

3

Review, then file

We prepare the work, walk you through the result before anything is filed, and explain it until it makes sense. Nothing goes in without your okay.

What to bring

For a typical personal return, it helps to have these on hand. Not everyone needs every item — this is a general starting list so you can gather what applies to you before your appointment.

  • T4 slips from employers, and any other income slips you received
  • T5 slips for interest, dividends, and other investment income
  • RRSP contribution receipts
  • Medical expense receipts and charitable donation receipts
  • Your prior-year return or notice of assessment, if you have it
  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Direct deposit information — for example, a void cheque or your banking details for a refund

General information only — your situation may need different documents. If you’re unsure about an item, bring what you have and ask when you get in touch.

Why KELVZ

The office neighbours come back to

No call centres, no jargon, no runaround — just knowledgeable help that treats you like a neighbour, because you are one. Our goal is to help businesses and individuals understand and meet their tax obligations — not just file forms. English and Spanish spoken.

Plain language, always

Taxes are confusing enough on their own. We explain what we’re doing and why, in words that make sense — before anything is filed, not after.

Fair, honest prices

Good tax help shouldn’t cost a fortune. You get a clear quote on consultation, before any work starts — and that’s the price you pay.

Here for you every year

One small-business client has been with us 5+ years — “well organized, flexible and detailed oriented and trustworthy.” Once we know your situation, each year gets a little simpler.

Tips to keep you informed

On Facebook, we share plain-language tips about Canadian tax — the kind of thing we post:

TFSA or RRSP?

They do different jobs — one shelters growth from tax, the other defers it. Which fits depends on your income and your plans, so ask us before you contribute.

Keep your receipts in one folder

The CRA can ask for proof behind claims like medical or childcare expenses. One folder, kept for six years, saves a scramble later.

5 steps for great bookkeeping

Separate business and personal money, record expenses as they happen, reconcile monthly, keep your receipts, and review before year-end. Small habits, no year-end scramble.

Common questions

Questions people ask us

General information about filing in Canada — not advice for your specific situation. When in doubt, ask before you file.

What if I’m missing a slip?

It happens often. Many slips, like T4s and T5s, are also sent to the CRA by the issuer, and copies can sometimes be retrieved through CRA My Account or by asking the issuer for a duplicate. It’s generally better to track down a missing slip than to file without it, because the CRA may reassess a return later if income was left out, and an amended return may be needed.

To confirm your situation, message us on Facebook or call (647) 464-6315 or email kelvzbookkeeping@outlook.com.

I haven’t filed in a few years — can I still file?

In general, yes. Past-year returns can usually still be prepared and filed, and filing them brings your record up to date. You may need slips and records for each year, and any balance owing for a past year may have interest applied by the CRA. Getting caught up is a common starting point, and it’s usually simpler once the years are handled one at a time.

To confirm your situation, message us on Facebook or call (647) 464-6315 or email kelvzbookkeeping@outlook.com.

Do I need to file if I had little or no income?

Often, filing is still worthwhile even with little or no income. Filing a return is generally how eligibility is assessed for benefits and credits such as the GST/HST credit and certain provincial programs, and it can also create RRSP contribution room. If you had tax withheld from pay, filing is also the way to claim a refund of that amount.

What do I do about a CRA letter?

Don’t ignore it — most CRA letters are routine requests for information or receipts, but they include a deadline. Read what the letter is asking for and by when, keep the letter itself, and gather the documents it names. If you’re not sure what it means, get help understanding it before the deadline rather than guessing at a response.

To confirm your situation, message us on Facebook or call (647) 464-6315 or email kelvzbookkeeping@outlook.com.

What happens after filing?

After a return is filed, the CRA processes it and issues a notice of assessment, which confirms the return as filed or explains any changes the CRA made. Any refund is generally sent by direct deposit or cheque, and any balance owing will show its payment deadline on the notice. Keep your notice of assessment and your receipts — you may need them later, and receipts should generally be kept for six years.

Personal tax returns

Your T1 return, prepared from your actual slips and receipts — with credits and deductions checked before anything is filed, and the result explained to you in plain language.

What a personal return typically covers

  • Employment income (T4) and other income slips — investment income, pensions, benefits
  • RRSP contributions and how they affect this year’s return
  • Credits and deductions checked: medical expenses, charitable donations, tuition, childcare, moving and work-from-home expenses where they apply
  • Rental income or self-employment income reported on the right schedules
  • Spousal and family amounts coordinated so credits land where they help most
  • A review of the finished return with you before it is filed
Illustrative example

How it can go

A couple comes in with two T4s, daycare receipts, and a folder of donation slips they weren’t sure counted. The preparer works through each slip, checks the credits the family qualifies for — including ones carried forward from a prior year — and explains the refund or balance owing line by line before filing.

That’s the shape of a typical appointment: bring what you have, ask anything, leave knowing what was filed and why.

Quoted on consultation — fair prices, no obligation, and no pressure.

Corporate tax returns

T2 returns for incorporated businesses, prepared from your year-end records and filed on deadline — with the numbers reconciled to your books, not just typed in.

What a corporate return typically covers

  • Year-end financial statements prepared from your bookkeeping records
  • The T2 return and schedules, including capital cost allowance on equipment and vehicles
  • Owner salary vs. dividends reviewed so draws from the company are reported correctly
  • Losses carried back or forward where the rules allow
  • Filing deadlines tracked so the return and any balance owing are on time
  • A plain-language walkthrough of what the company owes and why
Illustrative example

How it can go

A small incorporated contractor finishes its fiscal year with a box of receipts and a bank statement. The records are organized into year-end statements, equipment purchases are sorted into the right capital cost classes, and the T2 is prepared and reviewed with the owner before filing — with next year’s deadlines noted so there’s no scramble.

Quoted on consultation — fair prices, no obligation, and no pressure.

Bookkeeping

Your records kept current month by month — sales, expenses, and bank accounts reconciled regularly — so you always know where the business stands and tax time is routine.

What monthly bookkeeping typically includes

  • Sales and expense transactions recorded and categorized each month
  • Bank and credit card accounts reconciled against statements
  • Receipts and invoices organized so nothing is lost by year-end
  • HST/GST collected and paid tracked for your filing periods
  • A simple monthly summary: what came in, what went out, what’s owed
  • Year-end records handed to tax preparation already in order
Illustrative example

How it can go

A café owner drops off each month’s invoices and statements (or sends photos of them). By mid-month the books are reconciled, the HST owing for the quarter is known well before the deadline, and the owner gets a one-page summary instead of a year-end pile of paper.

Quoted on consultation — fair prices, no obligation, and no pressure.

Payroll

Pay runs calculated properly — deductions, employer contributions, and remittances handled on schedule — so your team is paid correctly and the CRA is paid on time.

What payroll service typically includes

  • Gross-to-net calculations for each pay run, including overtime and vacation pay
  • Income tax, CPP, and EI deductions calculated per employee
  • Employer remittances prepared and scheduled by their due dates
  • Pay stubs your employees can actually read
  • T4s and the T4 Summary prepared at year-end
  • Paperwork kept for new hires, departures, and Records of Employment
Illustrative example

How it can go

A shop with five employees sends in hours every two weeks. Pay is calculated, stubs are issued, and the remittance amount is confirmed ahead of its deadline — so payday is uneventful, and no one is reconstructing a year of payroll at T4 time.

Quoted on consultation — fair prices, no obligation, and no pressure.

Government remittances

HST, PST, WSIB and EHT all have their own deadlines — and missing one costs money. We prepare and file your remittances on time, reconciled to your books.

What remittance service typically includes

  • HST/GST returns prepared from your sales records and filed by their due dates
  • PST tracked where it applies to your business
  • WSIB premiums calculated from payroll and remitted on schedule
  • EHT prepared for Ontario employers over the exemption threshold
  • Payroll remittances — income tax, CPP and EI — scheduled by their due dates
  • Every remittance reconciled to your books, so the numbers always tie out
Illustrative example

How it can go

A small business owner used to scramble every quarter — HST here, WSIB there, each with a different deadline. Now the remittances are prepared from the same monthly books, filed on schedule, and the owner gets one summary instead of four separate worries.

Quoted on consultation — fair prices, no obligation, and no pressure.
